As the southernmost commercial vineyard in the world, you would expect Otronia’s Pinot Noir to be rather wild… and it is! With notes of shitake and raspberry, it’s a playful wine with a striking, electric acidity and a mouthwatering finish with chalky tannin.

Otronia winery is certainly in Patagonia Extrema (extreme Patagonia), in fact, it claims to be the southernmost vineyard in the world – planted at 45’33 S in the wild steppes of Sarmiento, Chubut. Owned by Argentine billionaire, Bulgheroni, this is no small investment and with 50 hectares planted near to a cherry orchard. 

Producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a white blend (of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris) to date, there’s surely more to come from this Patagonian portfolio soon.

A typically Neuquén Pinot, with notes of blood and stone. Meaty, graphite-y, and with hints of ripe red cherry and wild herb, this is textbook Neuquén and a full-bodied yet fresh Pinot Noir.

Owned by Montes of Chile, Kaikén was established in Luján de Cuyo in 2001 although the Kaikén winery actually dates back to 1920. With vineyards in Vistalba, Agrelo and Vista Flores, the focus is on Mendoza however Kaikén also makes a Torrontés from Salta and Pinot Noir from Patagonia. You can taste the wide range of wines with a visit and tour of the Kaikén winery in Vistalba.

Chacra’s old-vine Pinot Noir has long been one of the best in South America, and this is the grand cru of their impressive portfolio: a lo-fi Pinot Noir made with grapes from vines planted in 1932. With intoxicating perfume and exotic spice on the nose, filled with aromas of wild meadow flowers and crushed berries, the finish is delicate, elegant and long. Deservedly an icon of Argentine Pinot.

Bodega Chacra is a biodynamic producer in Patagonia’s Rio Negro, owned by Italian wine royalty Piero Incisa della Rocchetta since 2004. Chacra winery is best known for its old vine Pinot Noir (including labels Barda and Sin Azufre) but also makes a small production of Chardonnay under the Mainque and Chacra labels.
