This is a new plantation in the southernmost vineyard in South America. The price reflects the difficulty in growing grapes here with problems of rain (2000mm a year, compared to the ideal 600mm) and a big frost risk.  It is a pricey bottle to try, but for adventurists who want to taste wine from 41 degrees latitude in Chile, you’ll be rewarded with an attractive, fresh and juicy Pinot.

The Villaseñor family has a mix of vineyards from Cachapoal and Curico in the Central Valleys down to Puelo – the southernmost vineyard in Chile. The winery is in Curico though, and you’ll find them producing a few odd ball varieties like Sangiovese and Grenache as well as the classics.

With French expertise and Patagonian quality, this is a win-win sparkling wine from Aquitania. Predominantly Pinot Noir with 40% Chardonnay (there’s another version with 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir to try too!) the fruit comes from Malleco in the south of Chile, a cooler climate perfect for high acidity and a great potential for sparkling wines. The base wines are aged 4 months in French oak barrels, and then made sparkling by champenoise method with 24 months on the lees. Overseen by ex-Bollinger bubbly-maker, Ghislain de Montgolfier, and business associates Paul Pontallier (Château Margaux), Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel) and top Chilean winemaker Felipe de Solminihac, it is perhaps no surprise that this is one delicious bottles of bubbles. Less than 1000 bottles made.

Aquitania is a premium winery based in Alto Maipo with vineyards in Maipo and also deep south in Chilean Patagonia, in Malleco. The winery is a collaboration between four renowned wine folk from France and Chile: Paul Pontallier (Château Margaux), Ghislain de Montgolfier (former Bollinger), Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel) and Felipe de Solminihac (top Chilean winemaker).

Bodega del Fin del Mundo

One of the biggest investments in Patagonian wine, Bodega Fin del Mundo is set in the middle of San Patricio del Chañar in Neuquen. The modern winery is in the middle of their 870 hectares of vineyards and Fin del Mundo produce a large mix of varieties showing how versatile Patagonia is for wine.

You might think of ‘Patagonia’ as glaciers and mountains, but the wine region is Patagonia is actually thousands of kilometers away from ‘the end of the world’ in Ushuaia. There is lots of sunshine and warmth in the summer, making it a welcoming environment for grapes as well as tourists.

While visiting the winery, you can taste through their many lines of wines which includes brands such as Ventus, Postales del Fin del Mundo and Newen. Their FIN Cabernet Franc is always a favourite if you have the chance to try it!

Best places to hike in Patagonia

In Patagonia, the desolate, wind-swept steppe gives way to jagged, snow-covered peaks. The stunning scenery, combined with an abundance of glaciers and lakes makes for a spectacular hiking destination. It is a well-deserved name, as a plethora of excellent trails depart directly from the town into Parque Nacional de los Glaciares. While you are in El Chalten, you can’t miss Lago de los Tres, a small lake set at the base of imposing Mount Fitz Roy (the inspiration for the outdoor company Patagonia’s brand). The 12.5 km trek begins at a trailhead at the north end of town. The well-maintained trail takes you up relatively gradually, providing views along the way of the mountains. The last few kilometers of the trail are very challenging, but the view at the top is well worth the climb.

It would be impossible to talk about hiking in Patagonia without mentioning the W-Trek in Torres del Paine National Park. Although located across the border in Chile, Torres del Paine is a classic Patagonian destination. The W-Circuit is a five to seven day loop that allows hikers to see the most magnificent parts of Torres del Paine, and is considered one of the best treks in the world. Refugios along the way can provide hot meals and lodging, although many hikers choose to camp. Make sure to book any refugios you plan to use well in advance, as they can fill up during high season.

Torres Del PaineIf you do not have enough time to do the whole W, be sure to hike up to Mirador de los Torres, a lookout that provides up close views of the huge towers for which the park is named. The hike begins at near Laguna Amarga at Hotel Las Torres and will take about four or five hours to reach the lookout. Refugio Chileno and Campamento Torres are both along the way if you prefer a two-day trek. Don’t forget your wind jacket- Torres del Paine is known for having wild windy days.

Additionally, when planning a trip to Patagonia, it is important to remember that it is a massive region. Make sure to give yourself enough time to comfortably visit all of your destinations!
