Rafael Tirado is part of the best know winemaking twins in South America. His brother Enrique makes one of Chile’s most prized and expensive wines under Chile’s largest producer Concha y Toro, while Rafael has opted for the other end of the spectrum: boutique and under the radar, although just as complex. His vineyards are planted in a maze-like formation near Lago Colbun in Maule.

Koyle Don Cande, Cinsault

Cinsault is one of the new belles of the south, and Itata is where she reigns. This wine is taken from old vines in Itata and is Koyle’s endeavour into some of the forgotten varieties of the south. They also make a fresh Cinsault rose here, and a white Muscat.

The Undurraga family are wine aristocracy in Chile, having founded Undurraga winery which is still one of the most important wineries in Chile. They sold Undurraga in 2006 and began Koyle – a smaller, biodynamic project based in Los Lingues, Colchagua.

Vinos Frios del Ano Tinto, Jofre

Juan Alejandro Jofre made the switch from working for a winery to working for himself when his style got a bit too daring for his employers. Now you can taste Jofre’s uncompromised wines from his own small production which boasts a small, but select, portfolio of early harvest wines which he fondly calls ‘Cold Wines of the Year’. Jofre prefers to pick early, and so you can expect high acidity and learner aromas. The picking dates are so important to his philosophy, you’ll find most of them on the bottle!

Producing wines in Curico, Juan Alejandro Jofre is bucking the trend of the fatter, riper wines that come from the region and proving that you can make a different style here. Jofre’s wines are not for everyone, but then again he doesn’t want to make them that way. If you like fresh acidity, and want to try a different style from Chile – this is the way to go.

White Bones, Catena Zapata

This is the impressive duo of single-vineyard Chardonnays from Argentine wine-royalty, the Catena Zapatas. The vineyard in question is their high altitude Gualtallary plantation, Adrianna, which boasts over 110 hectares of handsome vines. However these wines are carefully selected vine by vine for their different soils. White Stones as you may guess has a much stonier composition which shows the ancient riverbed the vines are planted above. The stones are all white, covered in calcium deposits. The Bones part is where a much finer soil is found, although it is peppered with limestone and calcarious deposits where you can find fossilised animal bones. That would be the only difference between the wines, which are each from the same mix of same clones (76 and 95) and slowly fermented in old French oak.

Catena Zapata is one of the most renowned and larger wineries in Mendoza, they are well known for making some of the top quality Malbecs in the 90s and turn of the century. This is from their top line of the winery, which sits alongside other single-vineyard wines from the Uco Valley. This particular vineyard, Adrianna, is one of the highest altitude in the Uco Valley and within the Gualltallary appellation, which is fastly becoming one of the most individual in Argentina. The head winemaker for this wine is Alejandro Vigil.
