Achaval Ferrer
One of the best-known wineries in Argentina, Achaval Ferrer will need no introduction for vinoargentino-philes. Originally founded by four Argentine partners and two Italians, Achaval Ferrer winery made its name by getting 99 Parker points for their single vineyard Finca Altamira Malbec in 2011 making it one of the highest scoring wines at the time.
You can expand your own Malbec repertoire by trying their other single vineyard Malbecs from around Mendoza. After rescuing some abandoned old Malbec vineyards, Achaval have three premium single vineyard wines: from Maipu, Uco Valley and Lujan de Cuyo. The Finca range are all made in the same way so trying them is a good way to taste the different terroirs (although you’ll need big pockets at almost $100US a pop). At the winery, they also make special edition wines from other varieties in Mendoza including Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and also a blend.
