There is no shortage of volcanoes in Chile (over 2,000 in fact, 500 of which are active!) and it is the unique geology of this seismically active country that has inspired the Volcanes de Chile range — hunting down interesting volcanic terroirs around the country.

Winemaker Pilar Diaz works with vineyards in six different wine regions to explore the diversity of volcanic wines in Chile while seeking fresh and energetic expressions of each place.

Inspired by the time time he spent in South Africa’s Swartland, Leo Erazo has been on a mission to show the stellar quality of Itata’s old bush vines and this Cinsault reveals the finesse that Itata wines can have. Elegant, floral and mineral with fine-grained tannins and a fresh, lasting finish. One of my favourite Chilean Cinsaults.

A los Viñateros Bravos is a project by Chilean winemaker Leo Erazo (of Rogue Vine, Altos Las Hormigas) in which he works with small growers in Itata. It’s a noble ambition: to make wines that celebrate and help finance the small growers which are rapidly disappearing in this region of old vines and ancestral winemaking techniques. But, fortunately, under the hand of Leo Erazo, the wines are, in general, excellent. A series of Cinsault, País and Moscatel.

The new vintages of VIK only have three varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère, in the blend. It is a triumph, with more savoury notes and resulting in a complex and rather elegant blend which stacks layers upon layers of spice, earthy and fragrant dark forest fruit aromas. With a fine tannin, tension and a long, concentrated finish, this is a wine that will age well for decades to come.

One of the biggest modern investments in Chile, VIK winery in Cachapoal is an impressive project in the middle of Cachapoal where the Norwegian Vik family purchased a 4,450 hectare valley in a bid to make the best wine in the world. After hundreds of soil studies, they planted 327 hectares of vineyards from which they only select the top grapes each year for their top wine, VIK – a rich red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.

The winery is state-of-the-art and a beautiful architectural masterpiece, that is perhaps only upstaged by the hotel next door: an artistic, luxury, boutique hotel that offers the most exclusive stay in Chile’s wine valleys with a top-notch restaurant.

This beautiful blend shows a juicy, vibrant and modern style of Maipo Alto with glorious forest berry fruit and fresh violet notes, polished tannins and a refreshing but supple finish carefully balancing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Delanz is delish!

Viña Carmen is Chile’s first winery, founded in 1850, but also one of the most forward-thinking and contemporary in its wine style. The name comes from the original founder’s wife but it is perhaps serendipitous that almost 150 years later Carmenére was first discovered in their vineyards, becoming an emblematic variety not only for Carmen but Chile ever since. Carmen winery produces a huge range of varieties today though, including top Cabernet Sauvignon (Gold is an emerging icon), fantastic old vine Semillon, juicy Cinsault, racy Sauvignon Blanc and, of course, spicy Carmenere. Young winemaker Emily Faulconer is one of the most exciting of her generation, and oversees all the ranges from their easy-to-drink everyday lines up to top level premium wines from all over Chile’s main valleys.
