This is part of a long search for the perfect Carmenere from one of Chile’s most historic wineries, Casa Silva. The quest led them to do extensive research into the terroir in Los Lingues and also extensive research into their Carmenere vines. The first microvinification was in 2005, and the result is this beautiful example (the bottle tasted is 2009).

Casa Silva is one of Chile’s most emblematic producers with a long history in winemaking and still family-run. With a gorgeous old winery in Colchagua, wine is their first love and their second love is polo. The family are national champions in polo, and you can see their handsome studs out on the polo field while drinking their wine from the great restaurant on site.

A natural wine, made from wild Pais vines – País Salvaje is an oddity for the Bouchon family and also Chile. The vines seeded naturally carried by bees and the wind, and grew in the middle of a creek among the vineyards. The wine was vinified naturally with nothing added in the process. If you have tasted some of the ‘natural’ Pais wines before, this might come as a surprise: there are no earthy or funky aromas, this is bright fruit and a fresh and juicy finish.

Amayna, Barrel F Sauvignon Blanc

Selected from a very special lot in Leyda, this wine is made from the oldest plantings of Sauvignon Blanc in the region. The winemaking team always blind taste all their different lots to pick which one goes to barrel, and it always happens to be this same lot: 8B. The roots are so deep that they anticipate being able to dry harvest within the next couple of years.

Making cool climate varieties in Leyda, Garces Silva has a beautiful vineyard estate spreading over Leyda. Brands include Boya and Amayna and you can taste through Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Tres Palacios, Family Vintage Merlot

This is classic Tres Palacios: old world, elegant and understated at excellent value. Merlot is a mistreated variety in much of Chile, pushed to the side or masqueraded in oak. Tres Palacios put their Merlot on front stage and treat it delicately, and the quality of the fruit shines. This Merlot comes from their estate in the Cholqui valley in Maipo, and has been aged 10 months in French barrels.

Specialists in Cholqui in Maipo, Tres Palacios have a classic line up of wines that over deliver in price, and hark back to a very classic, old world style of winemaking – fresh, good acidity and not over complicated.
