Tres Palacios, Family Vintage Merlot

This is classic Tres Palacios: old world, elegant and understated at excellent value. Merlot is a mistreated variety in much of Chile, pushed to the side or masqueraded in oak. Tres Palacios put their Merlot on front stage and treat it delicately, and the quality of the fruit shines. This Merlot comes from their estate in the Cholqui valley in Maipo, and has been aged 10 months in French barrels.

Specialists in Cholqui in Maipo, Tres Palacios have a classic line up of wines that over deliver in price, and hark back to a very classic, old world style of winemaking – fresh, good acidity and not over complicated.

Boya, Pinot Noir

Prioritising fruit expression and ditching the new oak, Boya is a Garces Silva wine, but under a very different concept and winemaker. The consultant winemaker for Boya is Rafael Tirado, and although this is the ‘second’ line (cheaper in simple terms), it is likely to pull in a different crowd – those seeking brighter fruit expression and simple wines. A slightly earlier harvest date, and aged six months in old (3rd + uses) oak barrels.

Making cool climate varieties in Leyda, Garces Silva has a beautiful vineyard estate spreading over Leyda. Brands include Boya and Amayna and you can taste through Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Monteagrelo, Syrah

Monteagrelo is Bressia’s single-variety line that focuses on their best expression of each variety, with the potential to savour over time. This wine has 15 months in oak and can easily be enjoyed for 8 years after its vintage.

About the producer

Walter Bressia has a long and esteemed career in winemaking, and now his family are becoming a stronger part in that too with their family winery ‘Bressia’. With an affinity for more classic, old world wines, Bressia’s style focuses on varietally correct or expressive wines with plenty of concentration but also drinkability. Monteagrelo is their line that focuses on high end expressions of different varieties.

Huaso de Sauzal, Chilena Pais

This is called ‘Chilena’ because it is one the most Chilean of all the varieties in Chile, Pais. Coming from the first criolla grapes that came with the Spanish missionaries 500 years ago, Pais has deep roots but is only recently being elevated to a new level beyond the table wine it used to be. Renan Cancino and his project Huaso de Sauza is one of the projects that has elevated the grape. Made as a natural wine, this is home made in his garage winery with no added sulpher.

Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. As well as Pais, he makes an excellent Carignan and also makes a fruity Grenache. Cancino is a natural winemaker, whose philosophy is making wines as the way they were always made historically in Chile – naked.
