This was Errazuriz‘s venture into making top schist wines from Aconcagua Costa, and they excelled when it comes to Las Pizarras. Using old barrels and small production, winemaker Francisco Beattig worked hard with Burgundy specialists to bring this wine to light – and the result is outstanding. Move over Sauvignon Blanc – Chilean Chardonnay is on its way.

Errazuriz is the top wine producer in the Aconcagua valley, specialising in wines from the mountain and also the coastal regions. Eduardo Chadwick is the main man behind Errazuriz and has formed important alliances throughout the wine world to bring them to Chile and explore the potential of its terrain.

Silencio, Cono Sur

Silencio is the result of picking select Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from different sub-regions in Alto Maipo. Viña Cono Sur specializes in Pinot Noir but wanted to make an icon Cabernet Sauvignon to add to their portfolio and 2010 was the very first year. 2011 (tasted) was a spectacular Cabernet harvest for Maipo, and the results are present in the wine.

Cono Sur is based in Chimbarongo in the Colchagua Valley, Chile but make wines from many different valleys. They specialize in Pinot Noir, however, they have a strong portfolio of consistent wines that range from the economic – but great value – Bicicleta line through to their top varietal line 20 Barrels. Silencio is their top Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ocio is their prize Pinot Noir.

Cono Sur’s Pinot Noir project started in 1999, when it set the goal of producing the best Pinot Noir in Chile. The idea was to make a wine that was unique, expressive, and proud of its New World roots, while vinified using traditional techniques from Burgundy.

The White Blend, Errazuriz

There is an exciting mediterranean blend movement happening in Chile, and Errazuriz is one winery spearheading it with their White Blend and Red Blend. This one blends Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, delivering a very serious endeavour and well made wine with delicate aromas but great weight in the mouth. Part of the wine was fermented in barrels, giving it a bit more complexity and you can feel some of the lees work in there.

Errazuriz is a leading wine producer in Chile with a state-of-the-art winery in the hills of Aconcagua. They have championed the Aconcagua region proving that you can not only make fabulous reds, but also edgy whites. Their vineyards are spread between Aconcagua mountains and valley floor, and new plantations closer to the coast.

Rhu, Viñedos de Alcohuaz

A stunning and wild landscape in the heights of the Elqui valley, Viñedos Alcohuaz is one of the most ambitious altitude projects in Chile. Made of Syrah, Grenache and Petit Syrah, the grapes come from 2200m above sea level and made in a winery with all natural wine making methods – crushed by foot in stone pools and aged in cement and large wooden vats.

Viñedos Alcohuaz is a passion project of three parts: Patricio Flaño, an artist at heart who fell in love with the magic of Elqui and took the risk to invest in making Chile’s highest-altitude vineyards; Juan Luis Huerta, the former mayor of the town who brings the local knowledge and knows the region like the back of his hand; and renowned winemaker Marcelo Retamal whose inquisitive nature led him to explore Elqui hunting for new wine adventures where he came across Alcohuaz, and together they are now building one of the most exciting sustainable wineries buried into the mountainsides of stargazing-territory: Elqui.
