Rooted in the cooler climate and limestone-rich soils of Pedernal valley, Pyros is all about characterful reds from this grand cru of San Juan. Owned by the Pons family (see Salentein) since 2008, Pyros is now under the hand of one of Argentina’s most promising young female winemakers, Paula González, who works closely with consultant winemaker Paul Hobbs. The line up includes varietal Malbec, Syrah and Chardonnay wines as well as their Malbec-Syrah- Cabernet Sauvignon Special Blend. The top highlights are the Single Vineyard Malbec and the Limestone Hill Malbec, which comes from a special plot of their most calcareous-rich soils. The Pedernal terroir offers great concentration, tension and acidity which makes the Pyros wines age-worthy indeed

About Pyros vineyards

Pyros is a single estate winery, with all the grapes for these wines coming from the Pedernal Valley. Pedernal is a deep and isolated canyon located in the stunning foothills of the Andes Mountains, in one of the highest altitude sub-regions of San Juan.

The Pyros vineyard is located southwest of the Pedernal hill along the west hillside at 1,400 m.a.s.l. It has a total surface area of 350 hectares and 80 hectares out of the total area have been planted with Malbec. Over the past couple of years, the team have been doing in depth soil studies with geophysisist Guillermo Corona to make micro vinifications of their different soil types.

The vineyard soil is primarily calcareous. It has a high percentage of pure limestone at the top of the hillside and rocks of different sizes and composition at the bottom of the Pedernal Valley.
