Lagarde
Historical, pretty and easily accessible from Mendoza, Lagarde winery is a handsome option for a visit. Renowned for its lovely reds and good sparkling wine, it is also home to the oldest white wine in the Americas: a 1942 Semillion, which was discovered in forgotten barrels and can still be purchased in the wine shop.
Just pulling up to the 1897 winery you get an idea of its age from massive old barrels on display in the garden. What’s interesting about the visit is seeing some of the old and new technology combine, and also there’s a pretty good explanation of how they make sparkling wine in the traditional champagne method. Despite being on a busy and built-up road, the back garden opens up into a lush and mature vineyard with olive trees where you can have a picnic.
Another nod to Argentine tradition is the ever-glowing, ember-filled fire pit in the outside patio where the restaurant serves up lunch daily.
