About Tinto de Rulo winery

Tinto de Rulo winery in Itata and Bio Bio in chile. Guide to Chilean wineries and natural wine producers

Since 2013, friends Claudio Contreras and Jaime Pereira have been working with old vines that are over 100 years old, dry-farmed and planted on granitic soils between the regions of Bio Bio and Maule. Not only is their aim to give greater value to these vinous heirlooms through their Tinto de Rulo wines but also bring back the artisanal traditions of winemaking in southern Chile — using restored raulí wood pipas and clay tinajas.

Tinto de Rulo may be a small winery but they are a key part of the modern pipeño movement and their juicy País and old-vine Malbec wines are particularly worth hunting down.

Tinto de Rulo is part of the Chileno Sur association in southern Chile.

About the Tinto de Rulo vineyards

Tinto de Rulo buys the grapes from their wines from small winegrowers in Bío Bío, Itata, and Maule. The vineyards are organic and dry-farmed, are located at 300 m.a.s.l and in some cases, have vines with over 100 years.

The Tinto de Rulo varietal line is made with minimal intervention and aged in Raulí barrels or neutral oak barrels. Within this line there is País, Malbec, Moscatel de Alejandría, Cinsault and Carignan.

The focus is on juicy, fresh and aromatic wines in an artisanal scale in their boutique winery.

Jaime and Claudio are both agronomists and partners and winemakers at Tinto de Rulo.

They make their wines with minimal intervention, do spontaneous fermentation with native yeast and do not make any wine corrections. All wines are aged for at least a year, in neutral oak barrels (which have been used more than ten times) and the País wines are aged in old raulí pipas. Tinto de Rulo is a natural wine producer.
