Clos Quebrada de Macul winery is best known for its Domus Aurea line of wines – rich and perfumed Cabernet Sauvignon from Macul in Alto Maipo. The Peña family planted their vineyard on the poor, alluvial soils in 1970 and today they have 16 organically-farmed hectares which go towards their Domus Aurea, Alba de Domus, Stella Aurea and Peñalolén wines. They also have a sister brand, Pargua.
Based in Almahue in Cachapoal and focused on old vine Carmenère, Clos de Luz has a boutique production. Owner Gabriel Edwards and winemaker Felipe Uribe have expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Grenache in the production but the real gem of Clos de Luz is Massal 1945 Carmenère which comes from ungrafted Carmenère vines planted in 1945, making them some of the oldest Carmenère vines in Chile.
Lapostolle winery also goes by the name of Clos Apalta, its iconic wine which was one of Chile’s first greatly acclaimed Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon blends from Colchagua. Today Lapostolle produces much more than just Bordeaux blends and from vineyards beyond Apalta. In the Collection line you’ll find some of the winery’s most interesting wines including a terroir series of Syrah and Carmenère from around Chile.
Lapostolle winery, owned by the French Lapostolle family that started Grand Marnier, has striking architecture making a visit a highlight in Colchagua. An award-winning restaurant and luxury hotel are also set among the biodynamic vineyards.
Viña Chocalán is a family winery in Maipo Costa making wines from the estate vineyard in Maipo and also in San Antonio. Viña Chocalán was founded in 2001 although the Toro have been involved in the industry (as a bottle supplier) since the 1940s.
In Maipo, the vineyard is dedicated to mainly red varieties and in San Antonio they produce white wines and Pinot Noir. Chocalán winery is open for visits, tastings and lunch.
