“Amanda Barnes knows her stuff — and makes a brilliant guide to the intoxicating world of South American wine. This is as comprehensive, detailed, evocative and up-to-date a guide to South America and its wines as you’re likely to find. You can tell it’s written by someone who lives and loves this region — she brings people and places to life with tender familiarity and vibrant detail, yet with the added perspective that an interested, involved outsider can bring to bear. It’s as dense, profound and vivid as the Brazilian rainforest!”

Dr Mark Hastings –
This book greatly exceeded my expectations. Beautiful photos and a great combination of an enophile’s dream combined with a travel guide! My wife and I have been to Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay on a wine tour previously, but we’ll definitely use your book when we return.

This is a much needed book and is outstanding. Logically and clearly structured it covers not only Chile, Argentina and Uruguay but also Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. The section relating to each country has an excellent and comprehensive historical introduction, with excellent analysis that focuses on social, economic. political and managerial aspects of the country’s winemaking. The section on Argentina, for example, is fascinating. It deals with a 470 year period looking at the influence of railways and irrigation dams plus all the economic issues. The introductions are a useful lead in to the regional analysis of grapes, vineyards and wineries. The lists of key information on each region such as grape varieties, altitude, area under vine, soils, rainfall and diurnal range is very helpful. There are very well chosen profiles of wineries, along with recommendations of wines at all price levels. As has been mentioned by the previous reviewer, Dr Hastings, the photos are stunning. The book is much more than a guide. It brings to life South American Wine culture. Highly recommended for any wine lover and a must for Diploma Wine students.

The book is simply magnificent. I had no idea I was buying a designer item, finely designed and beautifully produced as well as packed with so much information. I have already re-charted happy journeys across Argentina using the excellent maps to pinpoint the villages we passed through. I am also delighted to see that Cordoba (a favourite province) gets a look in. This will sit on the bookshelf by my new cellar for ready consultation!

Amanda Barnes’s expansive knowledge of South American wines is second to none. Having met the top-notch professional with her boots on the ground in Chile 5+ years ago, she was already deep into her exploration and hasn’t stopped since. It has been beautiful to see her perseverance culminate into this guide.
You can tell she has lived in these parts from the sense of place she paints with the historical framing, intimate knowledge of the regions, and wine suggestions described in this guide. Of course, there is much more to be discovered in this guide, but as there is nothing more comprehensive, I may as well call this guide The South American Wine BIBLE.

I recently purchased the hard copy version of this book, and it has exceeded my expectations. Over 500 pages, it chock full of producer profiles, in-depth analyses of the regions and terroirs in South America like I have yet to come across anywhere else online or in print, as well as tons of gorgeous photos, helpful maps, wine recommendations and so much more. There are even local cultural insights and travel tips for visiting the countries covered in the book. For wine professionals, this is an indispensable tome on all-things South American wine. For the wine enthusiast, this is inspired reading to launch or re-ignite your exploration of South American wine. No wine library would be complete without a copy of this book.

I really wanted to compliment you on and thank you for this incredible book. A wine book that starts off with Borges and Marquéz is impressive by any means, but the incredible amount of information and the beautiful way it is presented, and not to mention the fantastic maps, all makes it a true delight to read and leaf through. I wish there were more books like yours. Thank you so much! I will enjoy your work for years to come.

This book is amazing! I run a wine program at a restaurant in Chicago called El Che Steakhouse & Bar (IG: @elchechicago). The wine list is 100% South American, but it has been difficult to find the information that has been provided in this book. Everything in here is up to date totally applicable to all curious wine drinkers. There is so much to learn about this amazing wine growing region of the world and this book is an amazing way to see more!
